Tim Wakefield gave up 5 runs (4 earned) over 5 innings of work and left the game with an 8-5 lead. Then the bullpen fucked everything up. It has no been 7 starts in which Wakefield has failed to win his 200th game. Sometimes you just need to think it's not meant to be. I'm not going to sit here and say Wakefield is doing himself any favors, he isn't pitching well he has a 5.03 era, he hasn't had an ERA under 4.50 in 3 years and truth of the matter is that there is zero need for him once the post season comes around. I want to see him get his 200 but we need to win.
As for our offense, we can't be mad at them. Ellsbury opened the game up in the 4th with his 25th homer, a 3-run shot to give the Sox a 7-5 lead. David Ortiz hit a homer to the second deck in the 5th inning to give Wake a 3-run lead to work with. After it all fell apart in the 7th and 8th innings, The offense put in their best effort for a comeback and came up short. Adrian Gonzalez lead off the 9th with a solo shot to bring them within 2. With 2 outs and Ortiz on 2nd, Marco Scutaro continued his hot streak, driving in Ortiz with a single to center to cap off his 2-for-4 night. Aviles came in to run for Scutaro and ended the game getting thrown out at second on a poor steal attempt.
We need to get this shit together, because I'm worried if we finish the season it may carry over to the playoffs.
